PROJECT NAME
Beneath the Surface:
Why we need to protect our ocean
PROJECT TYPE
Motion Graphics
Number 14 on the United Nations's 17 Sustainable Development Goals is Life Below Water. As a scuba diver, I believe in our oceans and how much more is waiting to be discovered. We have the important responsibility to protect our oceans for future generations. I created an animated explainer video about critical issues impacting our oceans that educates, inspires action, and engages the audience.

Research.
The ocean produces over half of ‘the world's oxygen and absorbs 50x more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere.
Covering 70% of the Earth's surface, the ocean transports heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns.
91% of the ocean's plant and animal species are yet to be discovered.
Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year and 14 million tons of it end up in our oceans.
1/3 of the world's fish are overfished creating an imbalance that threatens their ecosystems and coral reefs
Carbon pollution is changing the ocean’s chemistry, slowing its ability to uptake CO2, making it more acidic, and harming marine life.
Moodboard.
I collected a variety of graphics to help determine the style. This helped me organize my ideas as well as gave me inspiration for new ones.

Target Audience.
People of all ages who are aware and not yet aware of the problem or the importance of protecting the ocean.
The explainer video serves as an introduction to the issue and helps raise awareness about why the challenges facing our oceans matter. It will remind them of the importance of protecting our oceans, and hopefully insight positive behaviors and interest.

Storyboard.
I created a storyboard to help organize each scene, with important transition points.

Storyboards are necessary for planning the narrative as well as explaining the process. The sequential drawings I made from a story of how the theoretical system will analyze your swing and the order I need to film.
Animatic.
I organized my storyboard elements to create my animatic. This helps with timing the audio to the right image to get a better idea of the flow of the motion graphic.
